Undercity – Guerrilla History & Urban Exploration

This is a fascinating tour of some of New York City’s underground (and above ground) spaces including the subway system, a centuries-old drainage tunnel under Canal St., the Amtrak tunnels, and the Williamsburg Bridge. Guided by urban historian & photographer Steve Duncan and filmed by Andrew Wonder, these are the kind of adventures that take me back to my youth, when sneaking into these amazing yet inaccessible places was something I actually had the nerve to do.

More of What Matters Most

More from What Matters Most, a Los Angeles based video and film outfit that i stumbled upon recently.

Above is “Belhaven Meridian”, a short film / music video for Shabazz Palaces, beautifully shot on 35mm black & white film in Watts, Los Angeles. Belhaven Meridian, director: Kahlil Joseph, is a one-shot homage to Charles Burnett’s 1977 classic Killer of Sheep, which was released 30 years after its completion date due to music licensing issues.

The second film above is Vans Syndicate, also directed by Kahlil Joseph, in collaboration with Luke Meier. It was shot on location in Seattle, Washington with the RED ONE as well as the Phantom HD systems and appears to be branded content for the Vans shoe brand. The music is Flying Lotus.

I’m impressed with the consistent and unusual form that What Matters Most takes in producing their work. The black & white theme, along with the commonality of dream sequence-like narratives is intriguing and is a welcome balance to otherwise commercial creativity; music. I’m looking forward to following their work.
