The Model, Seu Jorge & Almaz, and What Matters Most
Brazilian musician and actor, Seu Jorge, is the central character in ‘The Model’, a two-part short film directed by Kahlil Joseph and released by Now-Again Records (Stones Throw) and What Matters Most. The film is inspired by Jorge’s recently released album Seu Jorge and Almaz. If Seu is familiar, well it’s likely because of (1) his fame in his native Brazil, or (2) his feature film roles in both City of God (2002) and The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004) where he played Pele.
Chapter 2 after the jump.
As a dream sequence, which appears to be a common thread in much of What Matters Most’s films and videos, Jorge plays both the lead role and provides the supporting soundtrack. The film showcases three cover songs from the album (Roy Ayers’ “Everybody Loves The Sunshine,” Martinho da Vila and João de Aquino’s “Cirandar” and Kraftwerk’s “The Model”) and features the members of his band Almaz, as well as the producer Mario C and keyboardist Money Mark. The film takes the viewer into Jorge’s subconscious where he contemplates a woman’s figure that exists within his recurring dream. This woman is ‘The Model’.
The film is broken into two chapters. Chapter 1: (Prelude) Marcello in Limbo, followed by Chapter 2, Oshun and the Dream. Chapter 1 is a single take a one-take affair that follows Jorge as he weaves through a cliff-side mansion in the Hollywood Hills. In Chapter 2 we get treated to Marcello’s (Seu Jorge) hypnotic take on his dreams and how they involve music and the image of a mysterious woman that have come to consume him. Struggling to decipher his dreams from reality, Marcello attempts to make sense of it all.
